Warming Up the Kitchen: Nesting Herb Crates

Our kitchen has taken the backseat to other projects over the past several months but now I'm getting back to plugging away at my long kitchen to-do list. I love how much lighter and brighter it looks since removing the floral wallpaper and painting the walls white (I went with BM White Dove out of {these favorite whites}) but the space still needs a little warming up. One end is already pretty warm and cozy with an upholstered settee and brick fireplace but the eat-in area at the other end of the kitchen is looking kinda stark.

One of the ways that I'm planning to warm up our kitchen is by adding in some warm wood tones. Do you remember how I was crushing on these vintage-style nesting herb crates but they had been out of stock for months? Well I finally got my hands on a set (from {here}) and I'm loving how they look hung up in our kitchen:
And the best part? My new nesting crates do more than just look pretty - I've put them to work! The wall that they hang on is close to our kitchen table so they hold all of the things that we use at our table every day.

The sage crate has our salt shaker, pepper grinder, and some patterned cloth napkins
but since I'm not an everyday cloth napkin kinda girl, the paper ones that we actually do use every day are there too (hidden behind the cloth pretties):
The thyme crate holds our kitchen placemats, which are recent HomeGoods finds:
and the Parsley crate has olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette, which we use several times a week for dipping our bread at dinner:
And of course there needs to be a little something fun and decorative in the mix so that's what the rosemary crate's all about:
I'll be changing around what's in this crate throughout the year but for now it holds the last of our yard's hydrangeas (which are sitting in small mason jars full of water):
Some of my other plans for warming up our kitchen include adding a rug under our kitchen table, hanging a gallery wall of oil paintings, and adding pendants over the island ({these Federal lanterns} are the current frontrunner). I'm hoping to get the whole space pulled together before the holidays (which are only four months away - can you believe it?).
