Along with promising that I'll be properly spoiled for Mother's Day, my girls have agreed to help me create our first vegetable garden. That's right, me - the girl who never met a houseplant she couldn't kill - is going to try to grow food. The plan is to start small - a simple raised vegetable garden in our front yard, right around the size of this pretty little one:

Some of you may remember that when we moved into our house almost a year ago, I shared this pic of the neglected garden overgrown with mint that I was hoping to bring back to life some day:
The small fenced-in garden area is actually part of a larger stacked stone raised bed with room to expand the garden in future years. The bed is located at the bottom of our front yard (the fenced-in portion in the pic above is all the way to the right):Right now it's a mess of dead weeds and newly sprouting mint:

So my plan this weekend is to remove all the weeds, mint, and other debris, work some organic matter into the soil, and fix the fencing (we get tons of deer and other critters in our yard). Is there anything else that you would recommend to prepare our garden for planting? And what about choosing which vegetables to plant? I know I'd like to grow some lettuce but what else would you recommend that's an easy grower? Any and all advice, resources, or tips for this gardening newbie would be so appreciated!
I hope that you all have a great weekend that all of you moms enjoy some well deserved pampering! I'll let you know how things go with the garden!
