Like Craigslist, Only Better

If not, you need to - let me fill you in: 

What are they? They're Facebook groups that were created for local people to buy and list items for sale, similar to Craigslist. They're called "tag sale" sites here, but in other parts of the country they are called online garage or rummage sale sites. These sale sites are typically closed groups so you have to request an invite to join. Usually the group is only open to people living in a certain geographic area such as a town or county and the group administrator will approve you to join the group after confirming where you live by looking at your Facebook page or asking for a referral from another member. Some of these sites are general online sale sites (clothes, furniture, household items) and others are more specific (antique furniture only, etc.). There are probably about 20+ groups to choose from in the area that I live and once you join a few you'll quickly figure out which ones have "the good stuff"!

How to find them: The easiest way to find online tag sale sites near you is to type: Groups named "sale ___" into your Facebook search bar at the top - substitute your city, county, or state's abbreviation in for the blank. For example, when I looked for sale sites in Texas, over 100 options came up. 
Once you ask to join a group and are accepted, the group name will be listed on the left hand column of your Facebook home page - you can click on it any time you want to scroll through the listings.

Why Facebook tag sale sites are better than Craigslist:

• If someone leaves a comment that they want to buy your item, you have their name and a link to their Facebook profile. And often when you view their profile, you'll see that you have mutual friends. While I would never let a Craigslist buyer come to my house to pick something up without my husband being here, I'm perfectly comfortable with it when I see who the person is and that we have some friends in common.
• You can sell things that would never sell on Craigslist. For example, I listed a Restoration Hardware duvet and shams on Craigslist with no responses but easily sold it on my local tag sale site. There's something gross about buying linens from a Craigslist stranger but not so gross when it's someone who lives down the road.
• You can tag your friends when you see something for sale you think they might like. For instance, a friend of mine recently tagged me on a listing for a set of Juliska glasses because she knows I love Juliska. I received a FB message about the tag with a link that took me directly to the sale post.  
• Things that are in excellent shape and/or higher quality sell more quickly and for better prices than on Craigslist. Most people on Craigslist are only looking for a super cheap deal but on the tag sale sites it seems that more people are willing to pay a decent price for quality furniture.
• Things sell fast. I don't know if it's just the tag sale sites in my area, but most of the things that I've listed for sale have sold within the first few hours (often first few minutes) of being listed. There are thousands of people on many of these sites and I think most of them check FB much more often than Craigslist.
