With Valentine's Day around the corner, it's time to put away everything winter (are you listening Mother Nature?) and bring out some red and some touches of spring! My dining room table was looking awfully bare after I took off our winter table runner and sadly the DIY Macrame Fringe Table Runner that I love so much is too long for our dining table now (we had to take a leaf out of it) so I made this quick and easy no-sew burlap and jute table runner:
Making the table runner is so easy that it hardly justifies a tutorial - all you need is some jute webbing (I got mine at Joann's), a few yards of burlap, and a glue gun.
Cut your burlap to the size that you want your table runner, minus 1" in both the length and the width. Iron the burlap if needed. Then cut four strips of jute webbing to frame the burlap, leaving about of 4-6" extra webbing on each end. Lay it out flat like so:
The short end pieces should be on top of the two long side pieces. Using your glue gun, glue each end of the burlap to each short piece of jute webbing:
Starting at one end of the burlap, roll it up until you get to the other end:
Then, working in about one foot sections (so the glue doesn't dry too quickly), glue the burlap onto the jute webbing, rolling the burlap down as you go and smoothing it out with your hand:
Be aware that some glue will seep through the burlap so don't burn yourself!
Once you've made your way down to the other end, finish off the corners by (1) folding over and gluing down each end of the two long webbing pieces and then (2) folding over and gluing down each end of the short webbing pieces.
Thirty minutes and less than $10 later and your table's ready for Valentine's Day (especially if you throw in a few Trader Joes' tulips!):
I purposely didn't make the runner too Valentinesy because I'd like to keep using it after the holiday is over and maybe even bring it back out for Christmas.
While the simple look of burlap and white dinnerware is right up my alley, my daughters love Valentine's Day bling so I'm going to add a few (non-permanent) decorations to liven our table up for the holiday. I haven't finished the table yet, but I've gotten a start with these Target dollar bin felt hearts:
and these red polka dot boston terrier napkins that were on clearance at Anthro:
I'll share some final pics of our Valentine's Day table once I get it done next week. Until then, have yourselves a fabulous weekend!
