With the leaves starting to change color and the overnight temperatures getting low enough to bring out our winter duvet, it's finally starting to feel like fall in Connecticut. I wanted to add some fall touches to the outside of our home but I couldn't bring myself to do much decorating around our front entry because the way that our house is positioned, you can't even see our front door unless you're two feet in front of it. And while it makes me pretty happy when a package shows up on my doorstop, I just don't have enough love for the UPS man or the lawn service guy that I feel like decorating my entry just for them. So I decided to focus my fall decorating on the window boxes that are hung under the guest room windows to the right of the garage and are seen by everyone who drives by or visits our home. I hadn't done anything with them since we moved in so they were bare other than a few stray weeds:
My window boxes ended up being pretty tricky suckers - they are hung kind of high so I couldn't choose any plants that were very tall or I'd be blocking half the window and the boxes are very shallow so it was challenging to do much layering of the plants (which is what makes the prettiest window boxes!). I ended up using some ornamental peppers, cabbage, kale, mums, pumpkins, & gourds:
I love the bright fall colors of the ornamental peppers!
And the beauty of flowering kale:
I'm not a big mum girl but I did use a few of them:
My other window box is a bit longer - I used the same types of plants intermingled with small pumpkins:
I'm happy with how my window boxes turned out but not so happy that you can see my heinous guest room balloon shades through one of the windows (you can see them in their full ugly glory {here})? My in-laws were visiting this past weekend so I needed to keep them up (they serve as shades) but as soon as they leave, these ugly valences are going bye-bye along with them...
Have you gotten all of your fall decorating done? I haven't even started on the inside of my house but I'm hoping to start working on it this week. Along with working on our guest room as part of the One Room Challenge. Along with finishing painting the dining room. Better stop typing and start doing. Have a good one!
