Bostons & Boot Trays

Our whole family has had to make some major adjustments since moving from OH to CT, including our little bat-eared Boston:

Our old house had a fenced in backyard where she was able to go outside on her own and sun herself in the grass for as long as she pleased. Not that it was ever that long. She doesn't stray far from her momma :-)

But now we're living in the middle of the woods. With lots of wildlife. Some of it is harmless (unless you count the ticks that they carry...):
but there are also coyotes, bobcats, and the occasional bear. All of which would likely consider our 13 pound dog to be fair game.

So our new routine involves "babysitting" the dog when she goes outside. It hasn't been a big deal in the nice weather that we've had since moving here, but it's not going to be so much fun once winter comes our way.

And it's gonna be messy. Lots of snow getting tracked into the house. So here's what I'm thinking I need next to our back door before the snow comes:

A boot tray. I've found a few at some of my favorite home stores, such as Ballard Designs' Ballard Boot Tray,

Garnet Hill's Basketweave Metal Boot Tray,

Target's Smith & Hawken Copper Shoe Tray,

and Pottery Barn's Parker Shoe Tray:

But I think I'd like something with a little more character. VivaTerra's Metal Footed Boot Tray definitely fits the bill but at $175 it's not happening.
I could create something similar if I'm able to hunt down a cool galvanized metal tray. It would be as easy as adding a plastic liner and some casters.

A wood crate turned boot tray like this one by Carol Wright on Bloggy Moms is another great option:
There's an antique fair in town this weekend and I'm hoping I'll get lucky and find something with as much character as this vintage crate that I can easily DIY into a boot tray. Some shopping for snow boots is also in order because there's no way that my short little boots that got me through the Cincinnati winters are gonna cut it here...
