Bedroom Design Ideas: Decorating Above Your Bed

I'm plugging away on the makeover of our guest room and am trying to figure out how to decorate a space that I've always had a hard time with - the wall above the headboard. Our master bedroom has a tall headboard that looks fine without anything hung over it, but our guest room headboard isn't very tall and the wall above it could definitely use a little something. I went looking for some inspiration to help me figure out what I want to do with the space above my guest room bed and have rounded up some great ideas to share with you:

*Decorative plates - they can be arranged symmetrically or asymmetrically and you can use colorful plates that tie into the colors in your room or choose to keep it simple and go white. The best arrangement is one that complements the shape of the headboard:

*Mirrors - use either a single mirror centered over the bed (circular mirrors are my fave!):

or an arrangement of multiple mirrors:

*A shelf - hanging a shelf above your bed gives you a place to layer artwork (be sure to secure any leaning pictures to the wall!) and other items that are meaningful to you:

*Art - of course there's tons of options for hanging art over a bed. You can hang a single large piece of art,

multiple same-size art pieces arranged in a grid,

or an arrangement of art pieces in various sizes:

*Baskets - hang a single large basket such as a tobacco basket over the bed:

or hang a grouping of smaller baskets (I've seen some great ones at HomeGoods!):

*Decals - whether it be a decal of initials or a more intricate design, decals are a great choice for over a kid's bed since it eliminates the worry of having something fall off the wall and onto them:
{PB Teen}
*Suzanis, rugs, or other textiles with a beautiful design can be hung behind a bed in lieu of a headboard or above a headboard:

*Shutters - if you have a love for vintage, some tall shutters behind a bed is a gorgeous look:

*Canopies - normally, we think of canopies when we're talking about frilly girls' rooms but a more tailored canopy can add warmth and sophistication to a master or guest bedroom:
{Tom Sheerer}
*Screens - placed behind a bed, decorative screens can create a beautiful focal point:

*Decorative letters - whether it be a single large letter representing an initial or smaller letters that spell out a name, there are tons of options for unique decorative letters that can be used to create a statement above a bed:
{Houzz - Michelle Hinckley}
*Juju Hat - juju hat? Yes, juju hat. You may know them better as the huge poofy things. Either way, they are super fun hung over a bed:
{Andrika King Design}
*Whatever you love or collect! If you have a love of boating, hang a pair of oars over the bed:
{Houzz - Patrick Sutton Associates}
or if you have a love of hunting, hang a pair of antlers. Whatever says "you"!

We've got guests coming to visit in just a few days so I've gotta get moving on our guest room! It definitely won't be done before they come but it would be nice to at least get most of the bedding in put together and get a few things on the walls. Hope you all are having a good start to your week!
